OCTOBER 27│CONSECRATION SUNDAY
Guest Preacher│The Reverend Ben Nelson
Father Ben serves as Head Chaplain at the Texas Military Institute (TMI) in San Antonio, Texas.
Fr. Ben grew up in the Mississippi Delta where good bar-b-que and great blues were a part of the culture. His faith, his regard for story-telling, and his love of music, were all shaped in the flatlands of this culturally-rich part of the Magnolia State. He graduated cum laude with a BA in history from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and began the journey toward ordination shortly after graduation. He graduated with his Masters of Divinity in 2002 from the University of the South School of Theology. In 2013, Fr. Ben graduated again from the School of Theology with a Doctor of Ministry degree. His Thesis, “Spirit of Water, Spirit of Aloha,” combined an experience with creation, delight in the waters of baptism, and a love for Hawaiian cultural values.
Fr. Ben’s passions in ministry are working with children and youth, leadership development, healing and recovery from addictive illness, and the ever-deepening spirituality of generosity in our lives. He has served on advisory boards for several local outreach agencies and as a consultant for congregations wishing to deepen their life of generosity, leadership, and stewardship. Fr. Ben’s first joy is serving God, and the people of God, and he likes to imagine his overall title as “Grace Enthusiast” – a role that he hopes to live up to every day of his life.
The “Grow One Step” chart shows numbers of active parishioners who give and at what level. Use this a way to see where your giving falls relative to the big picture, and to consider how you might be led to increase your giving, or grow one step in 2025.
What is a Pledge?
Making an annual pledge or "Estimate of Giving" is a primary means by which the people of Good Shepherd share their gifts for the mission of ministry. An annual pledge expresses a heartfelt desire to give back a portion of our resources without attachment to be put into action toward the operational needs and opportunities of parish ministry life. Pledge contributions may be made through any of our normal giving methods, including identified cash offering, check, IRA disbursement, ACH auto draft, gift of stocks, or through our online Engage portal.
Pledged gifts are often made on a monthly basis, but any frequency of giving is welcome. Many choose to fulfill their annual pledge all at once with a lump sum contribution, while others will give weekly, or bi-monthly.
For the 2024 ministry year, 299 pledges totaled $1.4 million. As these ministries grow, so also will the need for support increase.
For more information about pledging, or giving of any kind, contact Scott Heersche.
