Chapter 2

In chapter two Merton describes what contemplation is NOT in order to both try to clear up misconceptions and keep us from going down unhelpful rabbit trails.  This chapter illustrates the difficulty with pinning a precise definition on contemplation.

  1. Contemplation cannot be taught or even clearly explained

  2. “Nothing could be more alien to contemplation than - I think therefore i am.”

  3. Contemplation does not arrive at reality by a process of deduction but rather by an intuitive awakening

  4. It is not sitting around thinking; it is not reflection

  5. It is not prayerfulness or peace found in liturgy

  6. It is not an escape from anything much less doubt or anguish
