About St. John of the Cross
St. John of the Cross was a 16th century Spanish mystic who worked closely with St. Teresa of Avila during a time of great upheaval and reformation in the church in Spain and wider Europe. They both desired a simpler life of prayer, poverty, and service in contrast to the complexities of the institutional church.
John of the Cross helps us understand and grow from our periods of aridity, lostness, and deep darkness as we walk the spiritual path. The Dark Night of the Soul is a commentary on a poem (Songs of the Soul) that he wrote in a dark time in his own life and a mystical commentary on that poem.
The Dark Night of the Soul consists of the poem, Songs of the Soul, and two Books of commentary, the Night of the Sense and the Night of the Spirit. The poem describes the “painful passage through the night and the unspeakable joy of encountering God.” The two Books of commentary explain in detail the journey described by the poem into union with God in love.
Come join us as we walk with John into the darkness in hopes of finding the obscure light of God illuminating the depths of our own unknowing. All are welcome!
If you’ve never read the Mystics - no problem! We’ll teach you how, or better put we’ll slowly learn together. Beginners are most welcome as we’re all beginners on the mystical path.
