‘Dark Night of the Soul’ Overview
This work consists of a poem and two sections of commentary (called Books) each consisting of many short chapters. Book One is a teaching on the Night of the Senses, and Book Two is a teaching on the Night of the Spirit. John sets out for the two books to be commentary on the poem that begins the work, however, he strays from the intention a bit and ends up writing a magnificent guide to the spiritual journey with a special emphasis on the occurrence of aridity and feelings of abandonment in one’s faith life.
