Chapter 11

  1. In the beginning the soul might not feel the flame of love, then she will long for god and not know where the longing comes from.

  2. Her thirst for God is “a living thing” 

  3. The aridities have to some degree purified the sensual nature of its ordinary compulsions

  4. She is beginning to escape the domain of sensory satisfaction as the sole basis of consolation - “Undetected I slipped away”

  5. The “narrow gate” is the night of sense
