Chapter 13

  1. Restraint of sensual desire continues

  2. other gifts of the night are: continual remembrance of God, dread of moving backwards on the spiritual path, patience. The soul is able to persevere in spiritual practices without gratification.

  3. She begins to draw strength from weakness

  4. The soul is “softened and humbled by the hardships God offers in the course of the night.”

  5. In the midst of hardship, God will often transmit (when least expected) sweetness, love, and awareness.

  6. The senses may not pick these gifts up directly, but they are there all the same

  7. The soul loses her desire for sensory satisfaction; all she cares about is God
