1. John now picks back up on the imperfections of beginners

2. Many beginners go about saddened that they cannot get the consolation they desire.

3. “They are greedy.”

4. They seem to avoid the “simple commitment to cultivating inner poverty of spirit.

5. The soul cannot ready herself, no matter how hard she tries, for divine union.  God myst take her by the hand and lead her “in the dark fire.”
